Project
Summary Sheet
Project Objective:
LMF Data Collection
Project Summary:
The
Ladle Metallurgy Facility (LMF) establishes final heat chemistries and
adjusts the steel ladle temperature for downstream casting. An accurate accounting of electric arcing, argon usage and
alloy additions is desired to aid in troubleshooting production problems and
to satisfy legal requirements for historical production records. |
A
Level 2 VAX screen provides the primary operator interface and
displays processing events in real-time; the operator has the ability
to manually enter some events and to correct automatic data, if
required (manual adjustments are recorded) |

Automatic
events are picked up from Level 1 Allen-Bradley PLC’s and directly
from various field devices |
Tracking
of time on each porous plug and total argon used; tracking of arc tap
settings, arc times and power used; tracking of material additions used, by
type and quantity |
Integration
with chem-lab to pick up and display actual heat chemistries;
integrated with downstream caster to display requested caster
temperature and ship time |
Economic Summary:
Reduced
facility manpower through automatic record keeping |
Improved
product quality through more consistent heat processing |
Hardcopy
report satisfies official Heat Log requirements |
Electronic
records aid in problem analysis and engineering studies to improve
heating practices |
